Penang assembly sitting to see 81 oral questions, two Bills tabled


GEORGE TOWN: A total of 81 oral questions, 783 written questions, two Bills and three motions will be tabled during the First Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Penang State Legislative Assembly.

Penang State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Law Choo Kiang said the sitting would see active participation from assemblymen through questions and debates involving state matters.

“The meeting will involve 81 oral questions and 783 written questions submitted by assemblymen.

“Besides that, two Bills and three motions will also be presented during the sitting,” he said on the first day of the state assembly sitting in Lebuh Light on Monday (May 11).

During the sitting, state tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Penang had gazetted seven cultural heritage items and 28 traditional food items under the Penang State Heritage Enactment 2011 as of 2026.

He said this in reply to a question from Wong Yuee Harng (PH-Pengkalan Kota).

Wong Hon Wai said one heritage belief item was still in the process of being gazetted.

He said all intangible cultural heritage items gazetted at the state level could be recommended for recognition at the national level under the National Heritage Act 2005, before being considered for international recognition by Unesco.

“The Penang government has supported the nomination effort for the Chingay Parade under Unesco’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity through a joint nomination by Malaysia and Singapore, which was submitted in March 2025.

“The state government is also supporting the nomination effort for the lion dance under a joint nomination by Malaysia and China, which was also submitted to Unesco in March 2025,” he said.

He added that the state government, through various programmes and festivals, would continue efforts to preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage at both domestic and international levels.

Among the initiatives, he said, were kebaya fashion showcases and Malaysian breakfast culture presentations during Penang Week at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, as well as the annual Chingay Parade in George Town and Butterworth.
