New guidelines being finalised to enhance safety in schools

JOHOR BARU: The Education Ministry will consider proposals to place security personnel in every school to enhance pupil safety, says its minister Fadhlina Sidek.

"The Education Ministry is currently finalising new safety guidelines through the involvement of the School Safety Reform Committee, which comprises experts from various backgrounds.

"Regarding the proposal to place security personnel in schools, the ministry will study the proposal," she said at a press conference after officiating the MyLesen B2 Sekolah (MyB2S) programme at the Austin International Convention Centre here on Monday (May 11).

Also present was Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

She was asked if the ministry would consider placing security personnel at schools following an incident where a pupil died after being hit by a van in front of a primary school in Parit Sulong, Batu Pahat, on May 5.

Fadhlina said various improvements were raised during meetings of the School Safety Reform Committee, which involved multiple agencies and relevant parties.

"The committee also includes various non-governmental representatives as well as community representatives to ensure that issues related to safety in schools are given due attention.

"We have also instructed teachers and principals to implement strict safety measures. There can be no compromise on the issue of safety," she said.
