KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) Battalion 9 Task Force arrested two local women and a Jordanian man at the illegal jetty area near Masjid Taqwa in Tumpat on Friday (May 8) evening on suspicion of attempting to smuggle six kg of cannabis flowers.
Southeast Brigade GOF commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the authorities detected a Mercedes-Benz S500L luxury car parked suspiciously near the riverbank in the area.
He said officers on duty observed the suspects repeatedly retrieving several transparent plastic packages from the riverbank before placing them into the vehicle.
"Inspection uncovered five transparent plastic packages containing six kg of cannabis flowers. The three individuals arrested comprised two local women and a Jordanian man. Police also seized a Mercedes-Benz S500L, several items of clothing and personal documents,” he said in a statement on Saturday (May 9).
Ahmad Radzi said two of the suspects claimed it was their first time collecting drug supplies at the illegal jetty area.
He said one of the local women was believed to have acted as an intermediary between a drug supplier in Thailand and the other two suspects, while the drugs were obtained from a dealer in the Golok area.
According to him, preliminary investigations showed the existence of a cross-border drug distribution network using illegal jetties as transit points before the supplies were brought into the local market.
"All suspects and the seized vehicle have been handed over to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Tumpat district police headquarters.
"The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM630,100 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said. — Bernama
