KOTA BARU: The use of the official police logo by irresponsible parties to spread unverified information on the recent fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old woman has been detected, says Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.
The Kelantan police chief said investigations are being carried out under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the offence of spreading false news.
“Among the content detected was the spread of speculation about the suspect’s background, as well as the exploitation of official police statements through manipulation or embellishment,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.
Mohd Yusoff said the irresponsible act was aimed at creating the impression that the content was an official statement from the police.
This includes using his official photograph to attract public attention, along with sensational headlines that could mislead readers.
Mohd Yusoff noted that the spread of false or misleading information can not only cause public alarm but may also disrupt and affect ongoing investigations.
As such, he urged the public to be more responsible on social media by not sharing unverified information.
On May 2, the body of Nurfisya Zulkifly was found on a road near a padi field in Kampung Simah, Ketereh.
The victim suffered multiple stab wounds and was believed to have been killed elsewhere before her body was dumped at the location.
Following the incident, three men aged between 19 and 66, and a 60-year-old woman, were remanded to assist investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
