Johor Bersatu, Muda reps question 'hasty move' to introduce nominated assemblymen

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government’s plans to introduce five nominated assemblymen at the state legislative assembly are a rushed move, says Johor Bersatu chief Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal.

Dr Sahruddin (PN-Bukit Kepong) said those in the Opposition bloc, including Perikatan Nasional and Muda, were not consulted on the matter.

“There was no engagement with us. The proposal is a hasty move.

“Even Pakatan Harapan assemblymen disagree with the move, which shows the lack of harmony in the Johor government,” he told the media at the sidelines of the state assembly meeting in Kota Iskandar here on Tuesday (May 5).

At the same press conference, Amira Aisya Abd Aziz (Muda-Puteri Wangsa) questioned the need for nominated assemblymen and their role.

“Is their function to help Barisan win in the elections?

“Will these nominated assemblymen also be entitled to pensions like elected representatives? All these questions need to be addressed,” she said.

Earlier, it was reported that the Johor government is expected to table a proposal to introduce five nominated assemblyman positions in the state assembly meeting on Thursday (May 7).

State health and environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon (BN-Yong Peng) confirmed this on Tuesday (May 5), adding that the state government has its own long-term plans behind the proposal, including improving service delivery.
