PETALING JAYA: Authorities must take a firm, coordinated approach to tackle the growing number of prank calls to the Fire and Rescue Department, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).

The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said there should be zero tolerance for such irresponsible acts.

“We are deeply concerned by the rising number of prank calls received by the Fire and Rescue Department, particularly late at night.

“These acts are not harmless mischief. They endanger public safety, delay emergency response, and put lives and property at risk.

“Every false alarm diverts critical resources from genuine emergencies. When fire engines are dispatched because of prank calls, real victims may be left waiting,” he said in a statement on Sunday (May 3).

He stressed that in life-threatening situations, even a few minutes’ delay can mean the difference between life and death.

“We urge the authorities to act firmly and in coordination to address this growing menace.

“This includes taking strict legal action against those who misuse emergency lines, with heavier fines and custodial sentences for repeat offenders.

“Swift prosecution will send a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he added.

Lee also called for stronger caller identification systems and stricter enforcement of SIM card registration to prevent anonymity.

“The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted call screening systems can help identify and filter suspicious or repeated prank calls, especially during high-risk hours, without affecting genuine emergency responses,” he said.

He also urged nationwide awareness campaigns to ensure the public, especially youths, understand the dangers of prank calls.

“Campaigns should be carried out through schools, media platforms, and community programmes.

“There should also be efforts to promote the responsible use of emergency services and strengthen inter-agency collaboration,” he said.

He also called for parents or guardians to be held accountable for prank calls involving minors.

“Prank calls are not a joke. They are a dangerous abuse of critical emergency services.

“As a society, we must take collective responsibility to ensure our emergency responders can do their duties without unnecessary disruption.

“The Alliance for a Safe Community calls on all Malaysians to act responsibly and uphold the integrity of our emergency services. Lives depend on it,” he said.
