KUALA LUMPUR: Efforts to strengthen protection for workers, including ensuring fair wages, better working conditions and stronger safety measures, must continue, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said workers remain the backbone of the nation’s growth, stability and progress.
"Labour Day is not merely a day of commemoration - it is a call to action.
"While Malaysia has made progress in improving workers' welfare, more needs to be done to ensure employees are protected and valued," he said when contacted on Friday (May 1).
He said workers must be assured of fair and just wages that reflect the value of their labour, as well as equitable working conditions that respect their rights and contributions.
"No worker should be left behind in our pursuit of national development," he said.
Lee called on the government, employers and stakeholders to enhance policies and enforcement to better safeguard workers’ welfare.
This includes improving job security, ensuring timely and fair remuneration, and expanding social protection measures, he added.
On workplace safety, Lee said stronger measures are needed to prevent accidents and ensure compliance with safety standards.
"Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of the day," he said, adding that a culture of responsibility and care must be cultivated across all industries.
He also highlighted the importance of mental health in today’s demanding work environment, urging employers to create supportive and inclusive workplaces.
"Employees should feel valued, respected and able to seek help without stigma," he said.
Lee said Labour Day should not only honour workers’ contributions but also reaffirm a shared responsibility to build a fairer, safer and more compassionate working environment.
"A nation that cares for its workers is a nation that prospers," he added.
