CLP pass rate rises to 35.4% in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: More aspiring lawyers have successfully passed the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) examination in 2025, marking an improvement in overall performance.

A total of 326 out of 921 candidates, or 35.4%, passed the 2025 examination – an increase from 30.24% recorded in 2024.

"This represents an increase of 5.16% compared to the 2024 results," Legal Profession Qualifying Board chairman Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said during his speech at the 29th CLP convocation at the World Trade Centre here on Thursday (April 30).

The qualification, he noted, represents a significant milestone for graduates, bringing them one step closer to fulfilling the requirements for admission as advocates and solicitors in Malaysia.

To ensure the examination remains relevant to the evolving needs of the legal profession, Dusuki – who is also Attorney General – said the board has implemented several measures to uphold standards.

"Among these measures is the appointment of question setters and examiners from among members of the Malaysian Judiciary, senior legal officers from the Judicial and Legal Service, senior legal practitioners from the Malaysian Bar, as well as law lecturers from leading local universities," he said.

The board has also introduced new guidelines for foreign law graduates.

The new framework – Guidelines on Requirements for the Certificate in Legal Practice Examination for United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand Law Graduates 2026 – came into effect on April 1, 2026.

Beyond that, the board has also enforced clear guidelines on the marking and grading of examination scripts to ensure consistency and fairness.

Dusuki said that examination results are determined purely on merit, with no quota imposed on the number of passes.

"The results are determined in a fair, transparent and professional manner," he added.

Since its establishment, he said the board has been entrusted with regulating the legal education standards in Malaysia, with the aim of producing legally qualified, skilled and professional practitioners.

The convocation ceremony was graced by the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.
