Unemployed woman fined for cheating HSA patient out of RM700

JOHOR BARU: A 29-year-old unemployed woman was fined RM3,500 by a Magistrate’s Court here for cheating a Hospital Sultanah Aminah patient into handing her RM700.

Nor Shahira Abdul Razak pleaded guilty to deceiving a foreign victim, identified as Gazee Israfil, into believing that payment was required during a discharge process at the hospital.

The offence was said to have taken place at the auxiliary police unit and admission registration counter area of the hospital on April 21.

According to the statement of facts, the victim would not have handed over RM700 if he had not been misled into thinking the payment was part of the hospital discharge procedure.

Nor Shahira was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a jail term of up to five years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Aishah Latif appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by a counsel from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Magistrate Nabilah Nizam fined the accused RM3,500 in default five months’ imprisonment.
