China becomes new growth pole in global education market, says report

BEIJING (Xinhua): China has become a new growth pole in the global education market, a think tank report said Saturday (April 25).

The report, titled "Study in China: Contributing to the Building of a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity," was released by Xinhua Institute, the think tank arm of China's Xinhua News Agency.

The dominance of traditional powers in international education is beginning to falter, and the appeal of emerging study-abroad destinations such as China, South Korea and Japan is growing stronger, according to the report.

Driven by the national strategy of building a strong education powerhouse, China has strengthened its educational capacity and accelerated its educational modernisation, the report said.

By synchronising educational progress with economic and social development, China has established a robust foundation for attracting international students to study in China, the report added.

Educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the rest of the world have entered a period of accelerated development, according to the report.

To date, China has established educational cooperation with 183 countries and regions, signed mutual recognition agreements on academic degrees with 61, and launched joint education programs with 45, the report said.

The global reach and influence of Chinese education continue to broaden significantly, it added.
