Protest to proceed despite appointment of new MACC chief, says Bersih

PETALING JAYA: The "Tangkap Azam Baki" protest will continue as planned despite the announcement of a new Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief, says the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih).

Bersih chairman Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz said the group welcomes the appointment of Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman to replace Tan Sri Azam Baki but noted the protest is not about the change in leadership.

"We welcome the recent announcement that Azam Baki's contract will no longer be extended," he said.

"However, this will not stop us from gathering as what we are demanding is reform of the MACC leadership structure as well as a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the alleged wrongdoings of Azam and MACC's abuse of power."

Muhammad Faisal said the appointment of Abdul Halim is a good starting point to restore integrity in the country.

"Therefore, it is important for the Madani government to immediately announce the establishment of an RCI to resolve these allegations," he said.

Muhammad Faisal also urged the government to carry out comprehensive reforms of the MACC regarding appointments and accountability.

Earlier on April 25, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has approved the appointment of Abdul Halim effective May 13.

Azam's contract is set to end on May 12.

Shamsul Azri said the proposed appointment was presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the King on April 24.
