Cops open probe into fireworks incident at 'Tangkap Azam Baki' rally

KUALA LUMPUR: A police investigation has been opened into the fireworks incident during the “Tangkap Azam Baki" rally outside at Sogo shopping mall which caused brief panic among protesters.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the incident, which saw a sudden explosion of fireworks at the back of the crowd during the earlier stages of the march on Saturday (April 25), would be investigated under Sections 6 and 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.

“Initial investigations found that there was another pack of fireworks that failed to explode and the fireworks used seem to be the normal ones used for festive celebrations.

“We will gather all evidence available and track down those responsible for lighting the firecrackers.

"Those involved in the gathering and any independent witnesses who saw the firecrackers being lit may also be called to assist in the investigation," he told the media in a press conference after the rally on Saturday.

He added that anyone with information on what happened should come forward voluntarily to assist the police investigation.

Sazalee also confirmed that over 300 protesters took part in the rally with over 200 police officers deployed to help escort the crowd and ensure security.
