PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry will provide RM300 in special assistance to each Malaysian student affected by the recent fire in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, Sabah.

In a statement on Thursday (April 23), the ministry said the funds have been allocated to schools, which will distribute the aid.

Affected students are also given flexibility regarding school uniform requirements.

“The Education Ministry has taken note of the recommendation by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to prioritise the schooling needs of students affected by the recent fire incident in Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, Sabah,” the statement read.

In addition, it said the Sabah State Education Department (JPN) and the Sandakan District Education Office (PPD) have been tasked with ensuring students’ needs are met, including arranging transport to school.

Psychosocial support is also being extended to students, teachers and members of the school community.

On April 19, a massive fire destroyed 1,000 homes in Kampung Bahagia, displacing more than 9,000 residents.
