Cement truck driver held over fatal crash in Sibu

SIBU: A cement mixer lorry driver has been detained following a fatal accident at the Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce traffic light intersection on Tuesday (Apr 21).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Azari Miskon said the detention was made to facilitate a more detailed investigation.

"The lorry driver in his 50s in this case has been arrested and a remand application will be made tomorrow (Apr 22) in court," he said.

Azari added that the lorry involved belongs to the same company as another cement mixer lorry involved in an accident on Feb 10.

In that earlier incident at Jalan Deshon, a lorry lost control and collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle, resulting in the death of a man in his 60s.

In the 10am incident on Tuesday (April 21), motorcyclist Benet Kawit, 39, was killed after being rammed by the lorry.

Dashcam footage of the incident, which has gone viral, showed the lorry beating a red light at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce intersection.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. It carries a penalty of between five and 10 years' imprisonment and a fine ranging from RM20,000 to RM50,000 upon conviction.
