PETALING JAYA: The Negri Sembilan state government has refused to accept or recognise a declaration on the removal of Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said this was because the Undang of Sungei Ujong Datuk Mubarak Dohak, who read and signed the declaration, no longer had the authority.
The four Undang had held a meeting on Sunday (April 19) where they decided to remove Tuanku Muhriz as the state ruler.
On Friday (April 17), it was announced that Mubarak's removal was due to 33 offences related to the traditions and customary laws.
Here's what to know
There are four Undang - influential chieftains - in Negri Sembilan - the Undang of Sungei Ujong, Undang of Jelebu, Undang of Johol, and Undang of Rembau.
The four, among others, act as advisors to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.
These four Undang are powerful because of their responsibilities, which include selecting the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
The four Undang have different titles which reflect the uniqueness of the Adat Perpatih, a matrilineal system practised only in Negri Sembilan.
Who are the four Undang?
The Undang of Rembau is Datuk Abdul Rahim Yassin, who was installed on Sept 14, 2024.
Abd Rahim, 70, who was born in the district, has extensive teaching experience across schools in Kuala Lumpur and Negri Sembilan and has held positions such as the head of department, head of unit, and assistant district education officer in Rembau before retiring in 2014.
The Undang of Jelebu is Datuk Maarof Mohd Rashad, who was installed in 2019.
Maarof, 69, is a former teacher and a former education officer at the Jelebu district education office. He was announced as the 16th Undang Luak Jelebu at a ceremony on Dec 20, 2018, to succeed his predecessor.
The Undang of Sungei Ujong, Datuk Mubarak Dohak, 65, was appointed Undang in December 1993. On April 17, he was removed as Undang during a special session by the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang at the Istana Besar Seri Menanti with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.
The removal was backdated to May 13, 2025.
The Undang of Johol is Datuk Muhammed Abdullah, 60, who was installed in 2016. The former businessman has replaced Datuk Mohd Jan Abdul Ghani, who was removed over 13 allegations involving customs and wrongful behavior.
