Senior citizen held after three people shot dead in Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI: Three people were killed in a shooting here, with a senior citizen held over the incident.

Police said the 71-year-old suspect was caught about 200m away from the shooting outside a restaurant in Kota Jaya yesterday.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the dead were two local men and a foreign woman.

“The victims, aged between 37 and 63, were believed to have been killed with a shotgun.

“The suspect was arrested at about 2pm,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Comm Ab Rahaman said the suspect was found to have a valid firearms licence.

“The licence was granted for the purpose of protecting crops from pests, and not for any other use.

“The suspect owns agricultural land, which qualifies him to possess a firearm,” he said.

The CPO said the motive behind the murders were still under police investigation.

“Based on preliminary investigation, the incident does not involve any element of secret society or terrorism.

“But we have not ruled out the possibility that the motive may be linked to personal debt,” he added.

Comm Ab Rahaman said the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
