SHAH ALAM: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah chided the Selangor government for not taking the necessary measures to counter the state's flood woes.

"I have advised umpteen times for the issue to be immediately resolved.

"I have advised that the state government refer to experts from foreign countries, especially the Netherlands, to get the best ideas in overcoming the flood problems in Selangor," said Sultan Sharafuddin.

His Royal Highness added that the advice had not been heeded and taken seriously and was akin to “pouring water on a yam leaf” (mencurah air ke daun keladi, meaning wasted advice).

"I was made to understand there are allocations from the state budget to overcome the flood problem every year, but no effective results can be seen to date," said Sultan Sharafuddin in his royal address at the opening of the first meeting of the fourth session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly on Monday (April 20).

The Ruler added floods still occured in several areas, especially in residential areas in the state which inconvenienced the people.

"Today, I once again advise my government to mainly focus in overcoming the flood problem as well as have short, medium and long term plans and action for immediate implementation," he said.

The Ruler also directed for the Klang River to be cleaned so that the  increasing Selangor population will be supplied  with a clean source of water for drinking and daily needs.

"I will not tire of continuing to order for action to be taken until the flooding and clean water supply problem is resolved and ended 'once and for all'," said Sultan Sharafuddin.
