Firefighters rescue woman stranded on sandbar at Balok Beach

KUANTAN: A 24-year-old woman went through a frightening ordeal after becoming stranded on a sandbar at Balok Beach here Sunday (April 19).

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant operations director Mohd Salahuddin Isa said they received an emergency call about the incident involving the 24-year-old at 8.37am Sunday.

“The incident happened when the woman went to a sandbar about 100m from the shoreline and did not realise the tide was coming in, leaving her stranded at the location,” he said in a statement.

He said nine personnel from the Gebeng Fire and Rescue Station began the operation and brought the victim back using a rubber boat, crossing water about 1m deep to reach the beach.

Mohd Salahuddin also advised the public to avoid being on sandbars when sea levels are changing and to remain alert to tide schedules.

“A sandbar may look safe during low tide, but it can be quickly submerged when the tide rises. Avoid going into risky areas alone, and make sure you have a friend or family member who can keep watch,” he said. - Bernama
