BENTONG: The lorry driver involved in the fatal crash between a car and a lorry that left four dead on Sunday (June 14) had tested positive for methamphetamine.
Bentong OCPD Supt Zaiham Mohd Kahar said the driver was detained at about 4am on Monday (June 15) after receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
"He tested positive for methamphetamine following a urine test.
"We will be remanding him this morning," he said when contacted on Monday.
It was previously reported that the accident, along KM43 of the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway in Bentong, killed four people including a one-year-old baby.
Pahang police chief Comm Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman had said that initial investigations showed that the accident involved a lorry carrying a load of metal dust that was driven by a 40-year-old local man and a car driven by a 55-year-old local man that had also been carrying three passengers aged between 1 and 58 years old.
It is believed that the lorry driver lost control of his vehicle at scene of the accident, which was downhill. It then overturned onto the road, crushing the car that was on the left lane.
"As a result of the accident, the car driver and all three passengers were confirmed dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the lorry driver suffered injuries to the head and hip and is receiving further medical treatment,” he said.
Background checks also found that the lorry driver has 15 prior traffic summonses.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
