Perlis Umno chief questions delay of state assembly meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis Umno chief Datuk Rozabil Abdul Rahman questions the reason behind postponing the state assembly meeting, which was scheduled to take place from April 21 to 23.

He said the postponement raises concerns, especially as the state is now led by a newly appointed Mentri Besar.

“In the context of this new leadership, the state assembly meeting should serve as the best platform for the Mentri Besar to present a clear direction, particularly in terms of economic development, addressing the rising cost of living and easing the growing concerns of the people,” he said in a statement on Saturday (April 18).

Rozabil said that, in general, state assembly meetings are held two to three times a year, with key functions including enacting state laws, approving the state budget, exercising checks and balances on the government, representing the voice of the people, and determining state policies and direction.

“As such, the question remains: why must this state assembly meeting be postponed?

“Where is the state’s economic plan? What concrete measures are in place to assist the people, especially farmers? What is the real strategy to attract investment and create job opportunities?

“The people of Perlis are demanding leadership with a clear vision, firm implementation, and the courage to be accountable,” he added.

Earlier, state assembly secretary Mohd Anwar Shahul Hameed informed assemblymen of the matter in a letter dated April 17.

Both the opening and the first meeting of the fourth session of the 15th State Assembly have been postponed to a date yet to be determined.

The letter was also sent to the Mentri Besar, the state assembly speaker, and other high-ranking officials, including those from neighbouring states.
