BRICKFIELDS: Efforts are underway to review and enhance Indian representation in local governance matters in Kuala Lumpur, says Hannah Yeoh.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said she had received feedback on the lack of Indian representation on Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s advisory board.
“I want to stress that the current members were appointed before my tenure as the minister (in charge of federal territories).
“However, moving forward, I want to look into how we can improve Indian representation on the advisory board,” she said on Saturday (April 18).
She was speaking at the Tamil Puthandu celebration held in Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.
The event was organised by 35 non-governmental organisations, with support from local communities in Brickfields.
The City Hall’s advisory board convenes several times a year at the mayor’s discretion, with members appointed for two-year terms.
Yeoh said she had appointed an assistant to oversee welfare matters concerning the Indian community.
“And within the last 100 days, she has been communicating with communities in Brickfields to understand their concerns.
“You don’t have to be an Indian to care about the Indian community, and I am speaking as a mother to two Indian girls,” she added.
Commenting on the event, the minister said she had allocated RM30,000 to support its logistics and planning.
