Sarawak government replaces ferries with bridges

KUCHING: Sarawak government replaced ferry services with toll-free bridges across the state to cut diesel use and improve links, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said on Thursday (April 16).

“Six bridges were completed, and four more were expected to be ready this year,” said Abang Johari

He said stopping ferry operations and using less diesel had saved "millions of ringgit" and that these savings could be used for public benefit.

He linked the state’s infrastructure projects to global conditions, citing conflicts in West Asia, higher oil prices, and higher living costs.

Abang Johari said the Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme had provided rural areas with 24-hour power using solar energy.

He said solar power had cut diesel use, reduced exposure to fuel price fluctuations, and improved living conditions in rural areas.
