Melaka man to face multiple charges for attacking cop with parang

MELAKA: A 31-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly attacking a policeman with a parang during a narcotics raid in Tanjung Kling last week.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the suspect attacked an officer from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department during the operation on Thursday (April 9).

"The incident resulted in a lance corporal sustaining injuries, including swelling to his left thumb," he said on Wednesday (April 15).

ACP Christopher Patit said the raid turned tense when the suspect suddenly issued threats before attacking the officer with a machete.

"The suspect fled the scene after attacking my man but was successfully apprehended shortly afterwards," he said.

He added that the accused will be produced before the Melaka court in Ayer Keroh to face six charges under Sections 324, 506 and 186 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and obstructing a public servant.

The accused also faces a more serious charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, as well as Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for possession of a dangerous weapon.

"The accused will also be charged under Section 12(3) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of drugs," ACP Christopher Patit added.
