26 drums containing unidentified liquid found oil palm plantation near Jempol


JEMPOL: The authorities have found 26 drums filled with a yet-to-be identified liquid discarded on an abandoned plot in an oil palm plantation in Felcra Air Hitam Seri Jempol near here.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said a team was dispatched to the area after the department received a call from the public around 11.30am Wednesday (April 15).

He said personnel from the Environment Department were also present.

"A Hazmat team was called in to help in the probe.

"They then helped open the drums to allow DOE personnel to take samples of the liquid found in them," he said in a statement.

He said preliminary findings revealed that the samples had a pH reading of six or neutral.

"However, only the DOE can establish if the contents in the drums are hazardous or had dangerous chemicals in them after running tests on the samples taken," he said.

He said the entire operation took four hours to complete.
