JB cops nab teenage couple in alleged baby abandonment case


JOHOR BARU: Two local teenagers were arrested in Taman Universiti Skudai near here in regard to the abandonment of a newborn baby girl.

Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Radin Ramlan Radin Taha said the 18-year-old male and the 19-year-old female were detained on Tuesday (April 14) at 2.15am.

“Initial investigation found the duo did not have previous criminal records and tested positive for drugs,’’ he said in a statement.

ACP Radin Ramlan said the duo had been remanded on Tuesday (April 14) to assist with the investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Section 317 criminalises the exposure and abandonment of a child under the age of 12 years by a parent or person having care of the child.

It was reported that the baby girl was abandoned at the parking lot of a surau in Taman Universiti, Skudai, on Sunday (April 11) at 7.33pm.

A witness who heard a baby crying from the direction of the car park area found the baby wrapped in a towel and still attached to the umbilical cord.

The baby was taken to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for examination and treatment, and is in a stable condition.
