KUALA LUMPUR: The suspect involved in a hit-and-run incident that injured a traffic police officer has been arrested.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspect, believed to be police officer that was on leave for mental health issues, was nabbed on Jalan Cheras on April 13, following CCTV footage and intelligence gathering.

“While attempting to escape, the suspect rammed multiple vehicles and several others that have yet to come forward to file police reports. Damage was also caused to a police vehicle involved in the operation," he said in a statement on Monday (April 13) night.

The suspect was eventually arrested along Jalan Empat. Breathalyser and urine tests conducted on the suspect returned negative results.

A total of seven vehicle owners, including the team whose MPV unit was damaged, had come forward to file police reports.

"The police urge any other parties involved in the incident to come forward and file a report at the nearest police station," he said.

Further checks revealed that the suspect is a police officer with the rank of inspector. He had been placed on medical leave and was due for retirement.

"The suspect, who suffers from schizophrenia, is receiving treatment.

“The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 186 of the Penal Code for reckless driving and obstructing a public servant from carrying out their duties," said Comm Fadil.

On April 10, a police constable, identified as 27-year-old Kons Roslan Salleh, was on traffic control duty when an unidentified car hit him from behind along Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, Kuala Lumpur.

The car then sped off without stopping to assist the victim. The resulting collision led to injuries to the hand, head and rib areas.
