MoUs exchanged for proposed Sipitang energy hub

KOTA KINABALU: Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) have been exchanged for the proposed development of an energy hub at the Sipitang Oil & Gas Industrial Park.

The project is being pursued by Sabah Oil & Gas Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (SOGDC) in collaboration with EA Gibson as part of efforts to strengthen the state’s energy sector into a regional hub.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor witnessed the exchange of the MoUs during a courtesy visit by SOGDC and its strategic partners at his office in Menara Kinabalu on Monday (April 13).

The proposed development involves an integrated energy storage and distribution hub spanning about 275 acres, including facilities for liquefied natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen storage, as well as petrochemical infrastructure and power generation.

In the delegation were several participating industry partners from the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and the United States that will be exploring opportunities to build gas turbine plants, power transmission grids, and storage, among others.

The SOGDC delegation was led by its chairman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, together with chief executive officer and managing director Mohd Azmir Ramli, as well as board members.

At the meeting, Hajiji and Shahelmey witnessed the exchange of strategic and commercial MoUs between SOGDC and industry partners, including ACWA Power, Aboitiz Power Ltd and WEC, outlining initial collaboration for the energy hub project.

Hajiji said the initiative was in line with the state government’s aspiration to strengthen the energy sector as a key driver of Sabah’s economy.

“The state government welcomes the proposed development of this energy hub as it not only has the potential to attract high-quality investments, but also creates more job opportunities and stimulates downstream industrial growth in Sabah.

“We are committed to providing a conducive environment for investors, while ensuring that every development brings direct benefits to the people and the state,” he said.

He added that the development of the industrial park as an integrated energy hub would further enhance Sabah’s competitiveness in the oil and gas industry.

The SOGDC initiative is expected to boost the state’s energy infrastructure capacity, attract high-value investments and support long-term industrial growth in the area.
