Woman hanging up clothes stumbles on king cobra

KUALA TERENGGANU: A woman who was hanging up clothes to dry in Kampung Banggol Katong here had a terrifying encounter with a king cobra measuring over three metres long.

Zaipah Kunton, 59, said in the 9.30am incident on Wednesday (April 8), she was on the veranda doing her normal laundry routine when she noticed a long, yellowish object under a banana tree nearby.

She said she mistook it for a banana tree stem as it was not moving.

"I felt uneasy and asked several construction workers nearby to check it out and they told me it was a snake," she said.

Zaipah said her 32-year-old son Aizuddin Razak happened to stop by and immediately contacted the Malaysian Civil Defence Force.

She said it was the first encounter with a venomous snake in over 40 years living at the house.

Meanwhile, APM Second Lieutenant (PA) Tuan Muhammad Amir Amirul Tuan Soh said his team received an emergency call at 9.53am and arrived at the scene at 10.20am.

He said the snake was found in a pile of old furniture under a banana tree.

He added that the operation involving four personnel was successfully completed in 20 minutes despite challenges as the snake was hiding among the discarded materials.

He said the king cobra was later released back into its natural habitat far from human settlements. – Bernama
