Nuclear energy a ‘resilient, stable source’

PUTRAJAYA: Nuclear energy is gaining attention as a potential component of Malaysia’s energy mix amid rising energy demand and the need to transition to low-carbon sources, says Datuk Chang Lih Kang (pic).

The Science, Technology and Innovation Minister said nuclear energy is being comprehensively assessed for its potential to address the nation’s future energy needs.

“All considerations are being made carefully and based on evidence, taking into account safety, cost, legal frameworks, talent development as well as public acceptance,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday, Bernama reported.

He stressed that the use of nuclear energy is not intended to replace existing alternative energy sources such as solar, hydro or gas, but to complement them and ensure a stable, sustainable and resilient long-term energy supply for the country.

He added that the priority is to ensure every step taken in this process is conducted transparently and in a manner that benefits the country.
