JOHOR BARU: The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry will continue focusing on research and development to ensure the country is well-equipped to face future challenges.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said the ongoing energy crisis and the pandemic were strong reminders for many countries of the importance of technological sovereignty.
The nation needs to place an emphasis on research and development so that it no longer relies entirely on other countries.
During the pandemic, the country had to rely on nations that had the capability to manufacture vaccines.
Similarly, the energy crisis is a reminder that the nation cannot rely on other countries.
Chang said this at a press conference after officiating a new building at the Johor Chemistry Department office on Saturday (June 6).
The facility reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the nation's forensic analysis capabilities.
Improved facilities can help support economic development, particularly in Johor Baru, given that the city is among the fastest-growing urban centres in the country.
The three-storey building, completed earlier this year at a cost of RM22.8mil under the 12th Malaysia Plan, houses laboratories equipped with modern analytical facilities.
