Hot Weather: Govt initiates cloud seeding operations nationwide from April 6

PETALING JAYA: The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), will carry out cloud seeding operations to address the ongoing hot weather affecting the country.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the operation will be conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force, and is scheduled to run from April 6 to April 9.

He said the cloud seeding efforts will focus on major dams in Perak, Kedah, Perlis and Johor to ensure the sustainability of water supply for domestic and agricultural use.

“As of April 5, Kota Setar in Kedah has recorded Level 2 (heatwave) conditions, with daily maximum temperatures exceeding 37°C to 40°C for at least three consecutive days,” he said in a statement on Monday (April 6).

He said several areas in Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Perak, Pahang and Johor are also under Level 1 (alert) status, with temperatures ranging between 35°C and 37°C over the same period.

“The primary objective of the operation is to increase water levels at strategic dams and provide moisture to ecosystems, reducing the risk of forest and peatland fires,” he said.

However, he noted that the success of cloud seeding depends heavily on suitable atmospheric conditions, particularly the presence of cumulonimbus clouds and low wind speeds.

He said MetMalaysia’s technical team will continuously monitor weather conditions to determine optimal target areas for maximum impact.

“The public is advised to take precautionary measures, including limiting outdoor activities during midday, staying hydrated, and using protective gear such as hats or umbrellas.

“They are also urged to use water prudently and avoid open burning. Updates on the weather situation can be obtained via the myCuaca application or MetMalaysia’s official website,” he said.
