Malaysia on ‘crisis preparedness’ alert as global turmoil drives fuel price hike

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is now in "crisis preparedness" mode amid global uncertainties affecting fuel prices, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, urged all parties not to blame the government for the recent fuel price hike, stressing that it stems from external factors.

“The current situation is caused by a global crisis and requires the cooperation of all parties to deal with it together,” he said after his ministry’s monthly assembly here on Thursday (April 2).

“We should not feel complacent and only point fingers at the government, especially the Prime Minister. The fact is that it is a global crisis that we must all face together,” he added.

Commenting on the opposition’s move to use the fuel price hike as political capital, Ahmad Zahid said such actions were misplaced, as the situation was a direct result of international geopolitical developments.

“Ask them (the opposition) to go to the Strait of Hormuz now or try going to a West Asian country, let them see for themselves.

“We are actually lucky, so don’t keep using this global problem to blame the government. This is the reality we have to accept,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid called on all parties to stop the blame game and work together to find solutions.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to meet all Menteris Besar and Chief Ministers this evening to brief them on the situation and ensure state governments understand the challenges posed by the global energy crisis. – Bernama
