A symbol of national unity

Flags fly festively: The Jalur Gemilang line Lebuh Ayer Keroh in Melaka ahead of the National Day celebrations.

MELAKA: The Jalur Gemilang will take centre stage at the iconic Jonker Walk here as traders rally to transform the historic street into a colourful display of unity and national pride ahead of the 69th National Day.

Jonker Walk Management Committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said the committee would spearhead the initiative by decorating the main stage with national flags, setting the tone for businesses along the popular tourism spot to follow suit.

“We hope to see the Jalur Gemilang flying proudly throughout Jonker Walk as the country celebrates National Day.

“This is one of the historic city’s most recognisable tourism destination, and the display will send a powerful message of unity while allowing visitors from around the world to share in our celebrations,” he said in an interview yesterday.

Gan said traders were eager to embrace the National Day spirit and showcase their pride as Malaysians.

He acknowledged that some business operators had raised practical concerns about strong winds accidentally overturning their flags, but stressed that this did not diminish their patriotic spirit.

“They are proud Malaysians who want to be part of the celebration. Their only concern is ensuring that the flags are displayed correctly and accorded the respect they deserve.”

Gan said the committee would continue engaging with business operators and guiding them on the proper display of the national flag.

“With everyone playing a part, we can turn Jonker Walk into a memorable National Day attraction and demonstrate the unity that the Jalur Gemilang represents. Let us fly our national flag with pride and celebrate the country’s achievements together.”

Meanwhile, Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council president Datin Sapiah Haron said 1,100 Jalur Gemilang flags had been displayed from the Ayer Keroh toll plaza to Melaka Mall along Lebuh Ayer Keroh.

She said business premises and residents were encouraged to decorate their offices and homes with the Jalur Gemilang as a sign of love for the country.

The effort follows Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh’s call on Aug 10 for the Jalur Gemilang to be flown across the state as an expression of patriotism and love for the nation.

Ab Rauf urged government departments, agencies, local authorities, state subsidiaries and the public to display the flag at government buildings, business premises, educational institutions and residential areas.

He said the spirit of patriotism must be continually strengthened to ensure Malaysians appreciate the country’s peace, progress and prosperity, built upon the sacrifices, courage and determination of earlier generations.
