Johor produces over 214,000 tonnes of durian

JOHOR BARU: Johor continues to cement its position as one of the country’s leading durian producers, supported by strong output, expanding export markets and sustained government backing for the industry.

State agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip said Johor currently has more than 18,000ha of durian cultivation, with about 16,000ha already bearing fruit.

“Johor records an annual production of over 214,000 metric tonnes, making it a key contributor to the country’s durian supply.

“Tangkak remains the top-producing district with 60,349MT, followed by Batu Pahat (52,328MT) and Segamat (47,236MT).”

Zahari said the state’s durian industry features a mix of premium and popular varieties.

Musang King accounts for about 40% of production, followed by IOI (30%), Kampung premium (20%) and Black Thorn (10%).

“Each variety has its own market appeal, with Musang King continuing to dominate due to strong demand and premium pricing,” said the Buloh Kasap assemblyman.

Beyond local consumption, Johor has emerged as one of Malaysia’s main durian exporters.

In 2024, it exported more than 32,000MT of durians through almost 200 exporters, with key destinations including China, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Zahari highlighted the role of smallholders in sustaining durian output.

“In 2025, Johor recorded 1,469 durian farmers and entrepreneurs, with 117 aged below 40,” he said, noting the encouraging participation of younger growers in the sector.

He added the state government has introduced initiatives to maintain competitiveness, including an allocation of RM1mil in 2026 for Johor durian and pineapple branding programmes.

“With continued support and strategic planning, we are optimistic that the industry will continue to grow and benefit farmers as well as the state’s economy.”
