Cabinet tapped for energy input

Nancy: Govt has sought views to ensure supply stability

KUCHING: The Federal Government is seeking feedback from Cabinet members on measures to strengthen the nation’s energy security while minimising the burden on the public, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said this follows discussions at the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) meeting on Wednesday.

“The government has deliberated on this matter and requested our feedback.

“Any decisions made will take into account our views as Cabinet members, as well as the overall state of the economy,” she told reporters during a Hari Raya Aidilfitri visit to Kg Tabuan Lot here yesterday.

Nancy said the feedback includes proposals such as work-from-home arrangements for civil servants and fuel subsidy measures.

She emphasised the importance of striking a balance between public needs and the government’s response to current challenges.

“Our focus is on mitigating any difficulties faced by the people. We will do our best to ensure they are not adversely affected, especially the working population,” she said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who chaired the NEAC meeting, said the government is intensifying efforts to strengthen energy security, including diversifying supply sources and exploring alternative routes to reduce dependence on the high-risk Strait of Hormuz.

He added that intervention measures would be implemented immediately to safeguard Malaysia’s economic resilience.

The meeting also discussed geopolitical developments, global economic pressures and security implications arising from the Middle East conflict.

Separately, Nancy said the former nurses’ quarters here will be redeveloped into a new Anjung Kasih facility to support families of patients at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

She said the project represents the second phase of the SGH Anjung Kasih, with the first phase already operational within the hospital grounds.

“We are grateful to the state government and Yayasan OBYU for their assistance in developing the second phase at the heritage building,” she said.

Anjung Kasih provides free temporary accommodation for families of patients at government hospitals.
