IPOH: A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing and burning copper cables in Bandar Lagenda in Teluk Intan.

Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Chua Kok Lian said the suspect was detained at about 11pm on Monday (March 23) by a team from the Teluk Intan police station while conducting a crime prevention patrol under Ops Lejang.

He said the man was apprehended in an oil palm plantation area at Lorong Lagenda 86, Section 1, Bandar Lagenda.

"An inspection of the suspect did not uncover any illegal items. However, checks at the location led to the discovery of a sack containing various burnt copper wires, believed to belong to Telekom Malaysia," he said in a statement on Tuesday (March 24).

He said the suspect and the seized items were taken to the Hilir Perak district police headquarters for further investigation.

"We believe the man had been stealing cables around Teluk Intan before burning them at the scene in Taman Lagenda.

"He has been remanded for four days until March 27 to assist in investigations under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

"The suspect has two prior records related to narcotics offences. However, a urine test conducted on him returned negative," he added.
