KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will extend the free GOKL11 bus route to include a new stop at the Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital (HRC), effective April 1.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh said the initiative aims to enhance public transport access for patients, their relatives, and those seeking treatment at the hospital.
"It is particularly for the elderly, whose population in Kuala Lumpur is projected to reach 11.7% by 2030.
"This new route was introduced following a meeting between the hospital and the mayor last February. At the hospital's request, the bus service will now enter HRC to assist city dwellers in need of treatment," she said at a press conference here on Wednesday (March 18).
Also present were Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai and state Health director Datin Dr Haliza Abdul Manaf.
Hannah Yeoh said the initiative was also part of the Federal Territories Department's efforts to make government facilities more accessible, ensuring that healthcare services are not only available but also easily reachable for all, particularly patients with mobility challenges.
She added that JWP was reviewing the city's senior citizen-friendly policy and would unveil new initiatives next month to improve services for the elderly.
Meanwhile, Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Prime Minister's wife, said that HRC is the only specialised rehabilitation hospital in Kuala Lumpur offering comprehensive rehabilitation services for patients recovering from injuries, strokes, and chronic illnesses.
"This hospital plays a vital role in assisting patients to regain physical function, improve mobility, and enhance their overall quality of life. Last year, we contributed to the hospital's equipment replacement programme to support and improve its services," she said.
In the meantime, Tan said HRC would roll out the Geriatric Wellbeing and Senior Citizens Community Programme for the Cheras zone at the hospital's field area.
He said the programme would integrate rehabilitation, physical activities, and community engagement to support patient recovery and promote the well-being of Kuala Lumpur residents. - Bernama
