Action needed to resolve subsidise rice shortage, says Sabah consumer group

KOTA KINABALU: The National Consumer Foundation Malaysia (YPNM) has called for immediate measures to resolve severe shortages of subsidised and affordable rice in several districts across Sabah.

YPNM Sabah chairman David Chan said the organisation had received numerous complaints regarding the lack of subsidised rice supplies, including in Kota Kinabalu.

"This situation is highly concerning as rice is a basic staple food for the rakyat, especially among low-income groups who rely heavily on subsidised supplies.

"The shortage has caused inconvenience and increased financial strain on households already facing rising living costs," he said on Tuesday (March 17).

Chan urged the government and relevant authorities to take swift action to address the issue.

He stressed the need to ensure sufficient supply, fair distribution and stricter monitoring to prevent hoarding or price manipulation.

He added that the government must adopt a more comprehensive approach to strengthening food security for essential staples.

"Ensuring a stable and adequate supply is critical to safeguarding the well-being of consumers.

"YPNM will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure concerns are addressed promptly," he said.

Late Monday (March 16), Sabah Star president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan also disclosed that rice shortages were affecting the interior districts of Keningau and neighbouring areas.

He similarly urged the government to act immediately to overcome the problem.
