SIBU: The state is targeting zero river accidents as more people are expected to use boats to return to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, says Sarawak Rivers Board chairman Safiee Ahmad.
He spoke after launching a safety campaign and presenting Petrol Subsidy Fleet Cards to small boat operators on Monday (March 16).
A total of 115 personnel and 15 boats will be deployed for monitoring and enforcement during the campaign.
Monitoring will be carried out in two phases: before the festive season from March 18 to 20, and after the celebrations from March 27 to 29 when schools reopen.
“During these periods, we will step up monitoring as many people are expected to travel home,” he said.
“Today’s campaign aims to raise awareness among river transport users, including both operators and passengers, so that safety remains the top priority,” he added.
Safiee urged boat operators to follow all regulations and guidelines set by the authorities.
Regarding fares, Safiee said monitoring was also underway to ensure operators complied with approved rates.
“Boat operators have been reminded not to raise their fares. If this happens, the public can report it to the authorities for action,” he said.
He said offenders under Section 34(2) of the relevant ordinance face fines of up to RM5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both.
Safiee also wished the public a happy Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
