Onn Hafiz: Door open for former Johor Umno members

JOHOR BARU: Johor Umno welcomes the return of sacked or suspended leaders from the state into the party fold, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi (pic).

“We welcome the president’s (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) Rumah Bangsa initiative for former members to return to the party.

“To those from Johor who have made statements about rejoining the party, we welcome them,” he said after chairing the state Umno liaison meeting yesterday.

Onn Hafiz, who is Johor Umno chief, said this was among matters discussed in the meeting.

On March 12, Sembrong MP and division chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said he is ready to return to Umno if his six-year suspension is lifted.

Former Tebrau Umno chief Datuk Maulizan Bujang is another party leader from Johor who was suspended.

On another matter, Onn Hafiz said no definitive date has been set for the upcoming state election although the meeting had discussed the matter.

“We took into account the people’s struggles and ongoing issues that need to be addressed by the state administration. We will continue focusing on our work on the ground.”

Onn Hafiz, who is also Johor Mentri Besar said the Hari Raya open house at his official residence (Saujana) will go on as scheduled as it is an annual affair.

“Other (state government-organised) open house events will be held on a modest scale,” he said in response to a question whether the state would host a Hari Raya open house.

All government agencies, GLCs and government-linked investment companies has been directed to hold off organising festive open houses this year, as a cost-cutting measure due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
