Four nabbed for cable theft along MRT Putrajaya Line

KUALA LUMPUR: Four suspected cable thieves who targeted the MRT Putrajaya Line have been arrested in a recent operation.

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad said the arrests were made following a police report lodged by the company over a cable theft incident that occurred near the Sri Damansara Barat station on March 3.

"All four suspects, aged between 30 and 45, were brought to the scene for identification and to assist in investigations related to the seized items.

"The incident disrupted MRT Putrajaya Line services for three days, resulting in inconvenience to thousands of public transport users," it said in a statement on Sunday (March 15).

"The arrests were the result of intelligence gathering and surveillance carried out jointly by the Prasarana Malaysia Berhad auxiliary police unit and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) team from the Selangor police contingent," it added.

Prasarana said it would strengthen security along the MRT Putrajaya Line, including increasing security patrols, enhancing monitoring and strengthening strategic cooperation with authorities to ensure the safety of public transport infrastructure.

"The public is also urged to channel information to the authorities on any suspicious activities that could jeopardise the safety of the nation’s public transport facilities," it said.

Meanwhile, Prasarana president and group chief executive officer Amir Hamdan said close cooperation between its auxiliary police and the police will continue to be strengthened.

"It will be done through monitoring, surveillance and continuous information sharing to ensure cable theft activities are eradicated," he said.
