Counterfeit branded clothing worth over RM290k seized

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry raided a store in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, and seized 468 pieces of clothing suspected to be counterfeit, with an estimated value of RM292,800.

Its enforcement director-general Datuk Azman Adam said the operation was carried out by the ministry’s Putrajaya Enforcement Division in collaboration with the police and representatives of the trademark owners, based on intelligence information.

“The inspection found that the premises was used to store various branded clothing suspected to be counterfeit, believed to be intended for distribution and sale to consumers,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that the suspects were believed to be selling counterfeit clothing at popular shopping malls by offering discounts, Bernama reported.

“The branded products were claimed to be genuine and sold at prices ranging from RM450 to RM1,500 per piece.

“This action is believed to be aimed at attracting consumers to purchase counterfeit goods.

“Also seized were related documents, such as sales receipt books, sales QR codes and stock statement records,” he said.

Azman said the seizure was carried out in the absence of the store owner, and copies of the seizure declaration were pasted on each door of the affected store units.

“The ministry would like to stress that it will not compromise with any party involved in the sale or distribution of counterfeit goods that violate the law, infringe on the rights of registered trademark owners and harm the interests of consumers,” he said.
