Insurance agent claims trial to abusing son

JOHOR BARU: A 33-year-old single mother claimed trial to a charge of injuring her 11-year-old son.

The accused, who is an insurance agent, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee yesterday.

She was accused of abusing the child and causing him physical injuries at a staircase area in Permas City, Bandar Baru Permas Jaya, at about 5pm on Feb 24.

The offence, under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, carries a jail term of up to 20 years or a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina proposed bail of RM20,000 with additional conditions that the accused surrender her passport to the court, refrain from disturbing the boy and witnesses, and report to the nearest police station once a month.

Lawyer Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias appealed for a lower bail, saying that his client could only afford RM10,000 as her monthly commitments range between RM2,500 and RM3,000.

The court set bail at RM9,000 with additional conditions and fixed April 13 for document submission.

The accused posted bail.
