Single mother pleads not guilty to physically abusing son


JOHOR BARU: A single mother has claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to a charge of physically abusing her 11-year-old son.

The 33-year-old woman pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Sessions Court judge Mohd Zamir Suhaimee here on Wednesday (March 11).

According to the charge sheet, she is accused of abusing the child and causing him physical injuries in Bandar Baru Permas Jaya at about 5pm on Feb 24.

She was charged under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years', a fine of up to RM50,000, or both, upon conviction.

It also allows the court to impose a good behaviour bond and order 36 to 240 hours of community service.

Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina proposed bail of RM20,000, and for the accused to surrender her passport, refrain from disturbing the victim and witnesses, and report to the police station once a month.

The accused's lawyer Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias appealed for a lower bail, saying his client is divorced and could only afford RM10,000.

Mohd Zamir then set bail at RM9,000 with additional conditions and fixed April 13 for next mention. The accused posted bail.
