Laws may be amended, created to better deal with 3R issues, says Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA: The government may amend certain laws or create new legislations to address 3R (race, religion, royalty) issues sternly, as racial tensions are flaring recently, says government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

According to Fahmi, the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (March 11) discussed the slew of 3R issues raised recently.

"The Cabinet decided that stern action must be taken by the authorities including the Attorney-General.

“At the same time, if there are any loopholes in existing laws that could cause certain quarters not to be even scared of arrest, then it (the laws) should be reviewed,” said Fahmi during his press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Wednesday (March 11).

Fahmi said a statement will be issued by the Attorney General at the soonest time possible.

Recently, activist S. Chandrasegaran, also known as “Cikgu Chandra”, was attacked with three of his cars burnt at his house in Taman Kinrara, Puchong.

It was also reported that the activist's home in Puchong was also attacked, with the windows of his vehicles and residence damaged.

It is believed that he was attacked following escalating debates over the demolition of illegal places of worship in the country.

At the same time, controversial independent preacher Zamri Vinoth, was also assaulted by a group of men, just days before Cikgu Chandra was attacked.

The police have said the matter is currently under investigation and they urged the public to refrain from spreading speculation or provocative content, particularly on 3R matters.
