Cops approve over 500 permits to sell fireworks, firecrackers in S'wak

KUCHING: Sarawak police have approved over 500 permits for the sale of fireworks and firecrackers for the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, says state police commissioner Comm Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah.

He said the Sarawak police contingent received 584 applications for permits, approving 572 of them to date.

"Only the 'Happy Boom' fireworks and 'Pop-Pop' firecrackers are allowed to be sold.

"The government policy is to allow the approved firecrackers and fireworks for festive occasions, not just Hari Raya but also Chinese New Year and Gawai later," he said on Wednesday (March 11).

Comm Mohamad Zainal was speaking to reporters after visiting the Satok Ramadan bazaar here during the "Jalinan Kasih" programme organised by the Sarawak contingent's crime prevention and community safety department.

He reminded the public not to set off fireworks and firecrackers after midnight as this would disrupt public order.

Comm Mohamad Zainal also said only 10% of police personnel statewide would be allowed to take time off during Hari Raya.

"Leave has not been frozen, but we're only allowing 10% from each unit and division to go on leave," he said, adding that there were over 11,000 police personnel in Sarawak.
