Gang robbers caught for 42 burglaries in Penang

PETALING JAYA: A robbery gang responsible for at least 42 burglaries in Penang has been busted, Bukit Aman revealed.

Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M. Kumar said the success was a result of a special operation on Feb 15.

He said the gang, led by a 27-year-old local, had eight members aged between 22 and 35, with several being repeat offenders.

The group was active from 2024 to October last year, with estimated losses at almost RM1mil, he added.

He said five suspects nabbed during the operation were being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

“Three other suspects identified are currently in prison in Penang and Kedah for other offences,” Comm Kumar said in a statement yesterday.

He said all suspects had criminal records, including for gang robbery, theft in buildings and drug abuse.

“The gang broke into gated and guarded luxury residential areas too. They stole valuable items such as jewellery, electronic devices and other goods easy to dispose of,” he added.

He said the suspects will be charged at the Butterworth Sessions Court today.
