Teen among three nabbed for assaulting council officer


KOTA KINABALU: A 14-year-old boy was among three people arrested in connection with assaulting a Sandakan Municipal Council enforcement officer, who was patrolling at Batu 8 market in Sandakan last Friday (March 6).

All three suspects, who are from the Philippines, were detained separately on Saturday at Batu 8, Kampung Bariawa and the Kampung Melayu squatter area, according to Sandakan OCPD Asst Comm George Abd Rakman.

He said the arrests followed a police report lodged by the enforcement officer after the incident on Friday.

“They admitted involvement in the incident. Investigations are ongoing and all three have been remanded,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He said all suspects tested negative for drugs following urine tests.

ACP George added that the case is being investigated under Section 186, Section 332, and Section 147 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from carrying out duties, causing injury to a public servant, and rioting.

Last Friday, the 50-year-old enforcement officer was injured after allegedly being attacked by a group of men while patrolling the market.

The victim claimed he had reprimanded a man suspected of openly selling contraband cigarettes at the market, which led to a misunderstanding and the assault by several unidentified men.
