Court acquits MUCM VC Jayakumar


PETALING JAYA: The Melaka Sessions Court has acquitted and discharged Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) vice-chancellor Prof Dr Jayakumar Gurusamy of a charge under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Sessions Court judge Elesabet Paya Wan granted the acquittal on Monday (March 9) after the prosecution accepted the defence that the essential elements of the offence were not established, including the absence of evidence of dishonest intent or personal gain.

Sharina Farhana Nor Sa’ari represented the prosecution, while Harvinderjit Singh, Farhan Read and Amirtha MCPirapu represented Dr Jayakumar..

“I feel vindicated and am grateful that the judicial process has concluded and the truth has prevailed.

“I have always acted with integrity, and I am pleased that the Court’s decision affirms this. My focus remains on advancing MUCM’s academic mission and supporting our students and faculty," said Dr Jayakumar.
