Move to have calming spaces in public areas

KUALA LUMPUR: A revised draft plan will make residential areas and public spaces more accommodating for individuals with cognitive disabilities and neurodivergent conditions.

Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu (pic) informed the Dewan Negara yesterday that the revised Draft MS 1184:2025 will include the establishment of designated calming spaces in public areas.

These spaces will feature soundproof safe rooms with dim lighting, designed to assist individuals in de-escalating during moments of crisis or sensory overload.

“Sensory management is also a key focus. This includes minimising the use of flickering or buzzing fluorescent lights and replacing them with natural light or dimmable LEDs,” she said, Bernama reported.

She was responding to Senator Manolan Mohamad, who asked for details on new standards to ensure that housing and public areas were truly friendly for those with neurodivergent conditions and cognitive disabilities such as autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
